A THIRD generation Case-IH Maxxum tractor to compete in the important mid- to upper-horsepower market is already under development as part of CNH Globals shared platform strategy.
It will succeed the current MX Maxxum, says Guenther Apfalter, head of Case-IH operations in Europe, with more advanced features. These could include a full powershift transmission.
"The new design will make use of components available within the CNH organisation, but also with new features that take account of the future needs of farmers and other tractor users," he says. "It will be a good partner to our CVX hydro-mechanical drive tractor, and will be differentiated in several ways from its New Holland-badged counterpart."
In the meantime, the current second-generation Maxxum remains a key fixture in the Case-IH line, Mr Apfalter says. "CNH Global retains full rights to the Maxxum product and name, and will continue to sell this model exclusively through Case-IH dealers until its replacement is ready."
The sub-licence that allows Landini to produce a derivative of the tractor was not something demanded by the European Commission. It only required CNH to sell-off the Doncaster plant and CX and MX-C models.
"But Landini wanted to produce another tractor at Doncaster to maintain sufficient volume," says Mr Apfalter. "Negotiations were long and tough, but licensing Maxxum technology was, in the end, a necessary solution that enabled us to come to an overall agreement."
