Chance to reassess design of pig units

PIG units where herds have been culled due to foot-and-mouth now have a chance to reassess unit design, according to Nick MacIvor of pig buildings manufacturer AM Warkup.

"A 25-year-old 200-sow farrow to finish straw-based unit, typical of many built in the mid-1970s, is often so labour intensive that four or five staff are needed to run it.

"By comparison, a modern 200-sow controlled environment, fully-slatted unit can be run comfortably by one full time stockperson and a part-timer, reducing annual labour costs by as much as £50,000." &#42
