Charles: Low-tech is way forward
By FWi staff
PRINCE CHARLES has backed low-tech sustainable systems to solve the worlds hunger problems, reports The Guardian.
Addressing a conference on sustainable agriculture at St Jamess Palace, he said low-tech techniques offered a better solution than genetically modified crops.
“Where people are starving, lack of food is rarely the underlying cause. There is a need to create sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
“I would argue for a more balanced approach. Sustainable agriculture provides a pointer to what can be achieved.”
At the same conference, a counter-view was offered by Professor Jules Pretty of Essex University, reports The Daily Telegraph.
He said it would be difficult to tackle the malnutrition facing 800 million people without developments such as vitamin-enhanced rice.
