Charolais bulls are in demand
A GOOD trade from suckled calf producers fired demand for Charolais bulls at the British Charolais Cattle Societys sale at Welshpool last week.
In total, 37 bulls levelled at £2078 with bids twice peaking at 3700gns.
The average, £200 up on the last sale at this venue in spring 2000, was pushed up by suckled calf producers looking for bulls ready to work.
"Buyers have waited 18 months to buy new bulls and there has been a strong trade for Charolais stores. It all boosted the trade," commented auctioneer John Jones.
Needing more bull-power for their 110-head suckler herd at Tywyn encouraged R Roberts to invest 3700gns in Brynffanigl Ron, a 20-month-old son of Simpsons Gregg from Robert and Tecwin Roberts herd at Abergele.
Equalling the bid was Hadrian Wilson, Brecon who claimed Beeline Reward, which took the reserve championship for owners Steve Bailey and Partners (Crewe) who were selling at Welshpool for the first time.
Other top liners were Broadhill Roger from Staffs breeders Mr and Mrs C Venables selling at 3000gns. Flinsthire vet Esmor Evans sold his string of 10 bulls to average £2142, with two Damas-sired bulls making 2800gns each (Welshpool Livestock Sales). *
