THE LONG haul from Aberdeen to Worcester paid off for Charollais breeders William and Carole Ingram last week when a ram lamb from their noted Logie Durno flock topped the breed societys premier show and sale.
The triplet-born ram lamb is by Castellau Aristocrat, which was bought by the Ingrams at the breeds premier sale in 2000 for 2500gns. Last year sons of Aristocrat averaged 829gns at the Lanark video sale.
The sale topper, which is scrapie genotyped as class 1 – ARR-ARR – was bought by breed society chairman Charles Marwood and his wife Valerie, who run the Foulrice flock near York.
The Marwoods completed a hectic week of transporting sheep to the Royal Show, before returning to York on Thursday ready to load show and sale entries for the return trip back to Worcester the following day. Their efforts were rewarded with a 2250gns call from Shrops buyers J Gwilliam and Sons of Clun for Foulrice Cracker.
This ram lamb, also scrapie genotyped as class 1, was by the flocks successful sire Westonvale Jubilee, and had a performance-recorded lean index of 159. Another Jubilee-sired ram lamb from the same pen realised 1250gns to I T Davies, Brecon.
Heading the shearlings at 2400gns was an entry from Ely, Cambs, vendors Mr and Mrs Don Green with a smart son of Castellau Campaigner. Buyer was Tim Pritchard, Gwent.
The first of two 2100gns deals saw a Jubilee son, from the Foulrice shearling pen, knocked down to William Ingram, followed by an equal call from Cornwall buyers Mr and Mrs T Guy to secure a shearling from the Springfield flock of Mr and Mrs G Jones, Chepstow, Gwent.
Other notable prices included 1600gns paid by GeraintLloyd, Llanybydder, for a ram lamb by an Arjane sire from Mary Tullochs Rutland flock, while Lionel Organ, Rhos, Carmarthenshire, gave 1550gns for a ram lamb from the Brettles flock of Mr and Mrs M Rushbrooke (McCartneys). *
