Cheese-making era ends
AWARD-WINNING cheese-maker Richard Hares, who recently took the title at the Nantwich International Cheese Show in Cheshire, is to disperse his herd due to falling margins.
The announcement will bring to an end almost 50 years of cheese-making history for the family, which sells about 170t each year through Dairy Crest. Selling at £2.85/kg, but retailing nearer £7/kg, the cheese is now losing money. "The Nantwich Show was a hollow victory for us," said Mr Hares mother, Margaret.
The decision has made national headlines. "It seems people are more interested in your downfall. But sympathy wont help, it is a decent price we need," she added. *
