China pushes on with WTO application
CHINA is pressing on with negotiations for its entry into the World Trade Organisation despite failing to offer the USA enough concessions on free trade to secure an agreement.
China surprised many in the international community when it went much further than expected in promising to liberalise key sectors of its economy, including agriculture.
President Bill Clinton is thought to have been wary of closing a deal in the face of strong anti-China sentiment among some members of the US Congress.
