CLA says support BPC

PEMBROKESHIRE growers are being urged to help the British Potato Council spearhead a campaign to revive incomes by restoring market confidence and promoting consumer satisfaction.

Dyfed CLA chairman, Paddy Rooney, said the BPC had the potential and depth of structure to be a crucial stabilising force for what had tended to be a volatile market.

But growers had a critical role to play in helping the BPC meet its aims. And they should try to respond to specialist market demands for early salad and baking potatoes.

"For example, when this years glut of ordinary early crop potatoes in Pembrokeshire fell to £25/t, there was a good demand for early set skin salad varieties and early set skin baking potatoes, which were attracting up to £220/t," said Mr Rooney. &#42
