Conditions dictating yield

WHEAT harvest was finished last Thursday for C.G.R. Booth at Barton-on-Humber in North Lincolnshire. Yields have been variable and manager Paul Steer blames winter conditions. They have 60ha (150 acres) of spring beans left to harvest which should be fit next week.

“First wheat yields have been acceptable, between 9-10.5t/ha. But these were into fairly good conditions. Where drilled into poor conditions crops have struggled and this is reflected in the yields.”

All varieties have done reasonably. They grow Consort, Savannah and Napier for feed and Xi19 and Option for seed. “Option and Xi19 have done brilliantly but generally it is not the variety which has made the yield but the conditions.”
