Consumers have power to boost welfare standards
By FWi staff
CONSUMERS have the power to influence farm animal welfare standards by their choice of foods bought from supermarkets, junior farm minister Elliot Morley said.
The drive for higher welfare for farm animals must be a partnership involving both the Government and consumers, he said.
Mr Morley was speaking at an event in London organised by the RSPCAs Freedom Food scheme. The Freedom Food logo is used on foodstuffs from farms which produce animal products to high welfare standards and is now available in a wide range of retail outlets.
Mr Morley said: Freedom Foods can only be good news for animal welfare and for the significant and increasing number of consumers who want to know what animal welfare standards have been met before they buy.
