Councils paths threat

WEST Sussex county council is taking a stern line over blocked paths on the countys farmland and threatening to clear pathways using its own equipment, leaving the landowner with a bill for the job.

West Sussex based arable producer George Torrance said that the council issued several warnings giving farmers plenty of time to carry out the work. But he says in some cases they have moved on to land to clear paths.

"In my opinion it is better to get on and clear and maintain the paths adequately as soon as the crop begins to grow. With the debate over access, all producers should take the initiative and provide adequate access on footpaths and rights of way," he said. &#42
