Countryside Agency wants sustainable farming

A MORE sustainable approach to agriculture is one of the key policies mapped out by the new Countryside Agency when it opens for business this Thursday, according to interviews conducted with the chairman in several national papers.

Other priorities identified by Ewen Cameron for the agency were:

• Showing how to tackle rural disadvantage;
• Improving rural transport while taming the impact of traffic growth; and
• Increasing access to the countryside.

Cameron says he is determined that countryside issues should be given top priority within the government.

He also says he is keen to ensure Whitehall departments introduce “rural proofing” in every new policy, so that their impact on rural communities will be automatically taken into account.

The Countryside Agency has been formed from the amalgamation of the Rural Development Commission and the Countryside Commission.
