Cow energy needs

DAIRY cow maintenance needs may be underestimated by as much as 15 to 20MJ a day, equivalent to three litres of milk, in the UK metabolisable energy feeding system.

Tianhai Yan of the Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland, explained that the ME system was developed more than 30 years ago and both animals and diets had changed in that time.

ARINI and CEDAR, University of Reading, are now working to recalculate the maintenance requirement of dairy cows as part of the Feed into Milk project. &#42
