Crackdown on safety

BRUSSELS is preparing tighter food safety controls, saying Britains botched BSE tests have left the European Commission in a very difficult position.

European food safety commissioner David Byrne said more must be done to help counter the theoretical risk that BSE could be present in sheep. "This is very disappointing and the continued uncertainty leaves us in a very difficult position," he added.

Mr Byrne suggested extending a list of specified risk materials which must be removed from carcasses at slaughter. Further safety measures are likely. The commission is expected to unveil plans for individual sheep tagging. &#42
