Food security issues gains weight

A CAMPAIGN TO highlight the importance of food security is being mounted in the run-up to the next election by agricultural consortium, the Commercial Farmers Group.

A spokesman for the organisation, which is made up of farmers, academics and agri-businesses, said a recent publication by the Office of National Statistics had prompted the move.

It showed that food imports rose by 24.6% to ÂŁ19.1 billion between 1992 and 2002.

“We intend to make certain that all candidates in the forthcoming election are made aware of the case for national food security,” said CFG member and Yorkshire producer, Henry Fell.

“It is something that we take for granted at our peril.”
