Currie calls for compensation for BSE deaths

EDWINA Currie, the former Conservative health minister, called for
Government compensation for the relatives of BSE victims yesterday (Monday).

Mrs Currie told the BSE Inquiry in London that the compensation was necessary because of the “inadequate action” by Government ministers over a long period of time.

She blamed the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) for the problem. In written evidence she had described the Ministry as “crass and incompetent”.

She said if she had been in charge at MAFF then she would have released every scrap of information.

Many of the former agriculture ministers who presided over the BSE epidemic are yet to give evidence.
