Cutting UK flock

USING foot-and-mouth as an opportunity for reducing sheep numbers to more sustainable levels is being debated within the industry.

Environment Agency chairman John Harman has called for sheep restocking at reduced stocking densities.

But there are many other factors influencing what level producers will restock their flock, says MLC economist Jane Connor.

Sheep are less valuable from a subsidy point of view than cattle and producers may also look at various environmental schemes on offer, but these also tend to favour cattle more than sheep. &#42
