Dyslexic plight highlighted
Congratulations and many thanks for highlighting the plight of dyslexics (Farmlife, May 28). How right Pip Macaulay is in stating it wont go away.
My son, Rory, now 11, was last June diagnosed as dyslexic by the Dyslexia Institute in Lincoln. After many difficult years (for us both) in several schools, leading to private Saturday lessons, he is now "comfortable with himself" and gets a little help and a lot of understanding in his primary school which I hope will extend to secondary school in September.
One of the turning points in Rorys battle with literacy was when, for his 10th birthday, his godfather who farms in Cornwall, bought him a subscription to farmers weekly. This is still running and his sympathetic teacher allows him to read it during "quiet reading".
I am now trying Brainwave Training for Rory, which may stimulate the alpha waves of his brain and help balance the two hemispheres. He now enjoys cycling more as his sense of direction seems much improved.
Life is bleak enough for our next generation of farmers without the added hassle of dyslexics (in any walk of life) being misunderstood!
