Environment Agency faces criticism over floods

By FWi staff

THE Environment Agency today faces severe criticism over the way it reacted to floods which engulfed thousands of hectares of farmland during Easter weekend.

Five people were killed and hundreds of homes flooded as torrential rain engulfed a swathe across central England from Herefordshire to Norfolk on April 10-12.

The independent review on the handling of the floods will be released later this morning.

The report is expected to heavily criticise the Environment Agency for issuing inaccurate flood warnings and inadequately maintaining flood defences.

Environmental Agency officials said they had revised their procedures since the flooding.

Insurance claims for the flooding totalled hundreds of millions of pounds.
