EU finds bonemeal in French feed
A REPORT by the European Union has found problems with French controls on animal feed imposed in the wake of the BSE scare.
The research, by an EU veterinary mission to France in June 1999, said traces of meat and bonemeal continued to be found in cattle feed in France even though their use was banned in July 1996.
This type of material is thought to be the most probable cause of transmission of BSE.
The EU report is likely to cause embarrassment to the French government.
Last year the EU found that French cattle were raised on feed containing animal and human sewage, meat and bonemeal in defiance of European law.
France banned imports of British beef on the grounds that safety measures in this country were not adequate.
