EU scientists reject GM spuds
A COMMITTEE of European Union scientists rejected authorisation for a genetically-engineered high-starch potato.
The committee said it had “serious doubts” about the crop developed by Dutch company Avebe, which is resistant to the clinically important antibiotic amikacin.
The committee were concerned that the crop would pass on its genetically-altered qualities to other species.
The potatoes were not intended for human consumption but their starch was to be used in food and animal feed.
