EU to prosecute 10 nations over BSE eradication measures

The European Union (EU) is taking legal action against 10 countries for
allegedly failing to implement measures to eradicate bovine spongiform
encephalopathy.

France, Holland, Germany, Spain and Sweden are accused of breaching EU
standards for heat treatment of animal waste. The standards came into force on
April 1.

Portugal is said to have refused to answer requests for information and
Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, Finland and Italy are alleged to have failed
to make sure animal fodder was free from bonemeal.
