Europe brown rot moves next year
NEW pan-European control measures for brown rot will come into force in July 1999 says MAFF.
The disease, which is already reported in 30 potato crops in the north of Holland this season, causes severe yield loss and unsaleable tubers.
In the UK two outbreaks in potatoes have been recorded, in 1996 and 1992, both in the Thames basin. Last year tomatoes in Bedfordshire were reported with this damaging disease.
Control measures include prohibition of planting host crops on infected fields and restrictions on production of host crops on infected holdings. Use of infected watercourses for irrigation will also be restricted.
