FARMS are now being independently audited under the relaunched FABBL farm assurance scheme. Producers are to be inspected annually within 30 days of membership renewal.

The move means FABBL approved farms will meet UK Accreditation Service requirements, which will be a pre-requisite of any trade with other EU states, according to FABBL acting chief executive Archie Sains.

Concerns over membership fees of £75/year are to be addressed, he says. "We may look at an alternative, perhaps based on the number of animals on a holding so the cost bears less heavily on small farms."n
