Failand cows make 10,000gns apiece

TWO show cows sold for 10,000gns apiece when brothers Rob and Phil Jones offered the autumn and winter calving portion of their Failand herd at Manor Farm, Failand, Bristol.

Every inch a great prospect for this years show season, it was the 1993-bred Flechedor Chair Val Lila that was first to reach 10,000gns. She was bought for 4400gns at the 1994 South West Gateway sale and crowned a good show career by standing reserve champion at last years European Dairy Farming Event.

She calved in June after giving 10,863kg as a heifer – a lactation valued at £2097. Buyer was Michael Potter, who runs the Liberty View Holstein herd at Calne, Wilts.

The second 10,000gns call came from Devonshire breeder Peter Bosworth, who claimed the 1993-bred Kantwijk Blesje for his Draycote herd.

By Blackstar and with a 13,262kg yield as a heifer, she stood first in the strong heifer in-milk class at last years Royal Bath and West Show.

More big money came for Castledon Bell Linda, the Penn-Springs Mr C fourth calver that was champion at last years South West Dairy Show. She made 6000gns to Raymond Targetts Carymoor herd in Somerset. In total, 11 lots made 2000gns or more.

AVERAGES 27 cows £2503, 43 calved heifers £1244, six served heifers £1043 and four bulls £2100. (R B Taylor and Sons.) &#42
