Farm liberalisation on WTO agenda
THE World Trade Organisations third ministerial meeting opens in Seattle this week, with chaos predicted inside and outside the conference centre.
Ministers are due to launch a set of new global trade talks, to include further liberalisation of agriculture.
Up to 150,000 anti-globalisation protesters are expected to demonstrate while 7000 government officials and business representatives attend the meeting.
The Financial Times sees the farm debate as a contest between the USA, pushing for more liberalisation, and the European Union and Japan resisting change.
