Farm pollution incident in Norfolk
THE ENVIRONMENT Agency is investigating what appears to be a farm waste pollution incident in the River Wissey close to Swaffham in Norfolk.
A member of the public alerted the agency to a number of dead fish in the river close to Necton and North Pickenham.
Agency officers believe that over 600 fish have died from the incident, which has affected several miles of the river upstream from South Pickenham.
Kevin Rutterford, EA environment manager, said it was a category 1 incident, which is the most serious incident of pollution the agency deals with.
“The source has been identified and contained and the EA is working to ensure that those responsible do not permit any further pollution from the site.
“This is a reminder of the sensitivity of the environment and the need for individuals to dispose of farm waste appropriately.”
