Farmers leave food to help birds
By FWi staff
FARMERS are to feed birds on their land on a large scale in a project aimed at arresting the declining numbers of many species
Seventy-five producers will leave areas of grain unharvested, plant special food crops or scatter up to a tonne of waste seed, reports The Independent.
This is being undertaken as part of the BirdAid project, sponsored by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
It is hoped the initiative will provide winter rations for species such as tree-sparrows, corn-buntings and yellowhammers.
The switch from spring- to winter-sown crops has removed winter stubble, a vital winter food source for farmland birds.
