FARMERS markets are continuing to grow in popularity with both the public and producers.
Tomorrow (Sat) will see the third and largest York farmers market yet, with 45 producers selling their wares at the towns auction market.
About 20 farmers had stalls at the first market in September, which increased to 30 last month. The growing number of farmers participating reflects the success of the previous events, which were attended by about 3000 people and proved very profitable, according to one of the organisers. There are now plans to stage the event on a monthly basis.
Meanwhile, the founder of Londons first farmers market is to quit her regular job to work full-time on boosting the number of producer-run markets in the capital.
American-born Nina Planck, who founded the Islington market opened by farm minister, Nick Brown, last summer, will leave her job at the American Embassy in London at the end of next month.
The Islington market has proved a big success since stalls were set out for the first time in June. *
