Farmers promote British turkey in festive consumer campaign

British farmers are urging shoppers to put locally produced poultry at the heart of their festive feasts with the launch of the ninth annual #BuyMyTurkey Day campaign today (5 December).

The NFU campaign is calling on families to “celebrate British turkeys this Christmas” by choosing whole birds sourced directly from UK farms, using its Turkey Finder tool or by asking local butchers about the origin of their birds.

Producers say whole turkeys offer both value for money and versatility, providing a striking centrepiece on Christmas Day and ample leftovers for days to come.

NFU seasonal poultry group Chairman Jonathan Smith said: “Christmas is all about bringing people together and British turkey farmers are proud to play a part in that tradition.

“#BuyMyTurkey Day is a celebration of all the skill and dedication that goes into producing high-quality food. It is also a reminder that by choosing British, the public are supporting farming families and rural communities across the country.”

Farmers are also highlighting the cost-effective and sustainable benefits of choosing a whole bird.

“This year we want to highlight the connection between the farm gate and the festive table,” added Mr Smith.

“A whole turkey is not only a fantastic centrepiece, but also a sustainable choice at a time when many families may be keeping an eye on spending. It is versatile, nutritious and perfect for creating meals well beyond Christmas Day.”

Search tool

To help shoppers buy British and support local turkey producers, he pointed to the NFU’s online search tool.

“Our Turkey Finder tool makes it easy to find your local producers and buy the perfect bird for your celebrations,” said Mr Smith.

“If you’re buying from your butcher, ask if the turkey is British and which farm it’s been sourced from.

For supermarket shoppers, make sure to look for the Red Tractor logo and the Union flag to ensure you’re serving a great tasting British bird for your meal.”
