Film wrap cuts straw losses

AT about £1/t, losses of up to 20% from storing straw outside can be prevented by enclosing the stack in plastic film, says Danish maker Pomi whose Stackwrap system was shown at the Cereals event for the first time.

Four plastic wrap dispensers create a tunnel by orbiting the machines frame. Bales are then put into the tunnel using a telehandler and the frame powered forward. This process is repeated to create any length of enclosed stack. Any size or shape of bale can be protected in this way.

On damper sites a heavy-duty layer of plastic can be automatically laid down to give additional protection to the layer of bales.

Hydraulic power is provided by a pump and 19hp Ruggerini diesel engine. Control of the unit can either be automatic or by remote control.

For transport the £30,000 machine is towed end on with an overall width of 3m. &#42
