Fire kills 9000 chickens

A FIRE HAS killed 9000 chickens and destroyed a 14,000 sq ft shed on a farm in Ledbury, Herefords.

The cost of the fire at Hill House Farm has been estimated at more than £100,000, according to a report in the Malvern Gazette.

Poultry farmer Alistair Young called the fire brigade at around 11pm on Tuesday (Mar 8) after seeing flames licking one of his three large chicken sheds.

Two fire crews from Ledbury and two from Malvern prevented the flames from spreading to the other sheds, where there were a further 18,000 chickens.

An electrical fault was suspected as the cause, though the building had been rewired and refurbished just 18 months earlier.
