LIMTEST UK, the on-farm Limousin bull performance testing station in the Yorkshire Dales, staged its first sale last weekend, at which 4500gns was paid for a high weight-gain sire with an eye muscle depth of 85.8mm.
Scorboro Pasteur, the top-priced bull, was consigned by Jim Blooms herd at Driffield, East Yorks. It was one of 27 bulls that had been on test for four months at Richard Bradleys Limtest UK station on his farm near Leyburn. Pasteur is by Espoir and had shown a daily liveweight gain of 1.9kg while on test. Local buyers Peter and Angela Stephenson will use him on the 30 pedigree cows in their Howsyke herd as well as 60 commercial sucklers.
Genus staked a claim on this inaugural offering from the UKs only bull performance testing station. The companys bull buyer Neil Wharton gave 4000gns for Middledale Opefull from Richard and Paul Byas, Driffield. Opefull, by Sarkley Johnathon, had a daily liveweight gain of 1.96kg, which was converted into 43p/kg of weight gained while on test, one of the most efficient feed conversion rates of all the bulls.
The first intake of bulls had an average daily liveweight gain of 1.77kg at a cost of 50p/kg. Rations are computer monitored over every 24-hour period of the tests duration.
