Floods leave China floundering
to meet grain target
FLOODING along the Yangtze valley is threatening Chinas ability to meet its grain production target this year.
More than 21 million hectares (51.8m acres) of farmland have been left under water.
China has already blamed the flooding for reducing the summer grain harvest by 11m tonnes. The floods have also hit areas crucial to the countrys production of rice.
