Florida’s oranges survive the hurricane

FLORIDAS citrus growers proved to be among the few beneficiaries of Hurricane Georges, which swept across the south-east of the USA recently.

There was little serious damage to the crops, and the storm brought plenty of rain, reports the Financial Times.

Most analysts expect the official 1997-98 Florida orange crop forecast to match existing market predictions.

One analyst in August put the crop at between 219 million and 219.5m 90lb boxes. Others put the figure as low as 205m.

These predictions will mean a reduction of about 10% on last years performance.
