France to tear up GM soya

By FWi Staff

FRANCE is to destroy 46 hectares of soya beans containing genetically modified seed, reports the Financial Times.

Lots were found to contain 0.8% to 1.5% GM material — higher than the 0.5% level proposed by the EU.

Farmers will be compensated.

The Financial Times says this is another example of the French governments caution on a public safety issue.

Legal action is currently proceeding against France over its refusal to accept British beef because of BSE fears.
