French Government approves
farm aid change

THE French Government has approved a farming law designed to link future agricultural aid more tightly to social, environmental and economic objectives.

It is expected to reduce the amount of aid distributed in relation to the size of each farm.

Louis le Pensec, agriculture minister, said this had previously led to a concentration in ownership and regional disparities.

President Jacques Chirac expressed concern that the law risked demanding too much administrative control.
