FRENCH analysts Coceral and Strategie Grains have predicted an increased UK wheat harvest this year, based on an increase in the area planted and expectations of improved yields.

An official area forecast is not yet available. But the UK-based Home-Grown Cereals Authority says that an area increase of just 3% and an average yield of 7.9t/ha would give a record-breaking crop of 16.6 million tonnes.

Yields similar to the 1996 harvest would give a crop of more than 17m tonnes, the HGCA adds.
