FSA calls for tougher labelling

THE Food Standards Agency is to press for changes to European food labelling rules, reports The Guardian.

These would help prevent misleading claims, tighten controls on genetically modified foods, and provide better information for people with allergies.

The FSA also wants a national code of conduct to prevent the promotion to children of foods containing excess levels of fat, sugar and salt.

It says labels such as “low fat” confuse consumers and is pressing for legally binding standards on nutrition claims.

Clear regulations on GM-free labelling and a requirement to state whether animals were fed GM produce, are also needed, says the FSA.

The new regime follows nine months of research.
