Full house at Hereford event

ONE of the largest herds of Hereford cattle to be offered in the UK for many years attracted a capacity crowd when Peter Miles dispersed his Moigne herd at Dorchester.

The top price of 1100gns was paid by D Pritchard, Kingsbridge, Devon, for the Jan 1997-bred bull Moigne 1 Perfect, a son of the stock bull Louada Zodiac.

Bulk buyer was Stratfieldsaye Farms, Reading. Anthony Colburn was their bidder and he claimed 23 lots including maiden heifers, in-calf heifers and cows and calves. He wrote the days largest cheque for £10,321.

Among his purchases were the two highest priced in-calf heifers – by Zodiac and Fisher 1 Foster – both taken at 680gns.

Northern buyers were well to the fore, from as far away as Scotland, and among them was Gordon Harrison who secured 10 head for his herd in Wakefield, West Yorks. His wagonload included eight in-calf heifers and two maiden heifers costing a total of £6037. It included three in-calf heifers at 680gns.

Most active local buyer was R B J Vincent, Axbridge, who bought eight cattle. His selection included the young cow Moigne 1 Sophia, a Crickley 1 Hamlet daughter, sold with a heifer calf at 800gns. He spent £5544 followed by an investment of £4420 made in 11 head by P G Thorn, Highbridge, Somerset.

Leading bid for cows was 880gns paid by J Kelly, South Molton, Devon, for the eight-year-old show cow Moigne 1 Regina 30th, a Crickley 1 Brilliant daughter with a heifer calf at foot.

Furthest travelled buyers were W Mitchell and Sons, Glasgow who took the nine-year-old cow Moigne 1 Amethyst 28th, another Brilliant daughter, at 850gns.

Averages 67 cows and calves £585, 23 in-calf heifers £604, 37 maiden heifers £380 and 13 young bulls £810. (Russell, Baldwin and Bright.) &#42
