German BSE fears boost poultry

GERMANY faces a shortage of turkeys as shoppers panicked by BSE fears switch to poultry, reports The Independent.

A fifth case of BSE has been confirmed, Austria has banned all imports of German cattle and beef, and ministers have issued warnings about sausages.

As panic grows, sales of German staples such as sausages have fallen by 20% and shoppers have switched to turkey.

The countrys biggest poultry supplier – PHW Poultry Group – says prices are rising and shortages possible.

Newspapers have even tested exotic meats such as zebra, ostrich, kangaroo and crocodile, as “BSE-free alternatives”.
