Girl killed on farm as HSE urges child protection
THE Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is holding an inquiry after a four-year-old girl was run over and killed by a tractor driven by her father.
The accident happened on Monday just hours before the HSE issued a report saying that children needed to be better protected on farms.
Hannah Tobin had been taken for a ride on the tractor but was run over after getting off to be collected by her mother at a farm in Ramsden, near Witney, Oxfordshire. Her father Robert did not realise she was still near the tractor when he drove away, dragging her under the wheels.
The Tobins rent the farm where the accident happened and live on another at North Leigh.
In another accident Michelle Stanley, 16, a Venture Scout, died when she fell under a tractor driven by her scout leader, an inquest heard.
The HSE announced yesterday a drop in the number of farm deaths last year but 54 children were among the victims. David Mattely, chief agricultural inspector, said they were a vulnerable group who deserved better protection.
