Glenridge stirs bids at Crewe

A MAY-born heifer calf "bred in the purple" stirred bidders into action at a reduction of Dennis and Marlene Hughes Clayden herd of Holstein Friesians at Haslington, Crewe.

The six-month-old Clayden Jolt Romance, bred naturally by Second Look Jolt and out of the outstanding cow Glenridge Astre Romance, was finally knocked down to Philip Smith for his Bellacourt herd at Market Drayton, Shropshire, at 6600gns.

Astre Romance is the 8th successive generation of VG/Ex cows tracing back to Glenridge Royal Reba, a maternal sister to the renowned Glenridge Citation Roxy.

More Glenridge breeding came to the fore in Clayden Blackstar Nell, whose dam hails from the Glenridge herd in Canada. Shes due with her second in November and made 5600gns to join Dean Andersons Mayne herd in north Scotland.

Her 15-month-old daughter by Astre made 5000gns to the Parkley herd of local breeder D Riley.

More classic breeding was on offer through three grand-daughters of the famous cow Stookey Elmpark Blackrose. All three were full ET sisters by Rudolph out of Markwell Stardust Rose and all were claimed by Denis and Ina Lomas for their Glebedale herd at Congleton. They paid 5200gns, 4700gns and 3600gns.

Lancaster-based Paul Rawcliffe invested 5000gns in Topmark Raider Rhapsody who gave 8933kg as a heifer and heading the UK-bred cattle was the fourth calver Clayden Inspiration Merle 8th bought by John Tomlinson, Nantwich, for his Actonfarm herd.

Averages: 149 cows and heifers £1586; seven served heifers £1831; 25 maiden heifers £2905 and nine bulls £731. (Wright-Manley with Norton and Brooksbank)n
