GM hostility sparks brain-drain fears

PUBLIC hostility to genetically modified foods could drive industrial investment overseas, according to a report by a House of Lords committee.

Public unease, and occasionally outright hostility, are creating climate of deep anxiety among scientists, says the Select Committee on Science and Technology

This could dissuade children from following a career in science, and lead to a lack of investment in research, claims the committee.

Meanwhile, MPs have protested over the ritual slaughter of sheep for the Muslim festival Eid-el-Kabir.

Lib-Dem MPs Norman Baker and David Rendel said British sheep were sent to Paris where they would be cut and bled to death, breaking French and EU law.
