Good spring barley crop

THE spring barley crop is looking good in the middle of Scotland according to Glyn Whitehead of Aberdeen Grain. "We’ve seen about 13% of the total malting crop enter the store and about 96% will be used for malting."

Nitrogen is below 1.6% and screenings are all below 7% over a 2.5mm screen. "There are a few gapes and skinning, but not enough to make any difference at all." Optic, Chariot and Chalice have been the main varieties.

He says the winter barley harvest was a general disappointment, but farmers have accepted the situation due to the poor winter conditions. Yields depended on soil type and climate.
