Government losing badger battle

THE government says it will continue with its trial cull of badgers in the face of what it has admitted as a failure to win the public relations battle.

The cull aims to determine once and for all whether badgers transmit tuberculosis to cattle.

It has been condemned as cruel and ineffective by animal welfare groups as well as farmers, who say they will be ruined by TB before the result is known.

The government said in a reply to a select committee report that it had not got its message across to the public “as effectively as we would have wished.”
