GPS compatibility

COMPATIBILITY problems between the different GPS systems used by combine, spreader and sprayer makers are not as far apart as they might seem, says John Fuller of Great Yarmouth-based Galaxy Precision Ag Services.

Galaxy has taken two computer mapping programs and customised them, enabling farmers to interpret field mapping data from a variety of sources. "We have tailored existing mapping software to specifically overcome problems of compatibility between the systems used by machinery manufacturers," explains John Fuller.

"For example, using our customised software programs, farmers can view yield maps and files, all on the one screen, from MF, Claas, SOYL, Chavtrac, RDS, GPS data loggers and the forthcoming Greenstar system from John Deere." Two levels of program are offered by Galaxy Precision Ag Services. The basic program MapSheets, is able to translate any existing map data into a readable file for management purposes. ArcView is a more sophisticated version which also allows maps to be exported for use in other programs and GPS devices.

It is a system which Mr Fuller claims will unlock people from any one system offered by machinery manufacturers. "Whatever the map or yield data already gathered by farmers, changing machinery and ending up with a different GPS system does not mean the previously stored information is useless."

Hardware requirements for the software include a Pentium-based computer running Windows 95 Software prices start from £350. &#42

Galaxy Precision Ag Services reckons there is no need for farmers to be locked into a given GPS system offered by a machinery manufacturer when using customised Mapsheets or Arcview mapping software.
