Grain storage and handling cash aid

GRAIN growers in Ireland have been promised grants to improve grain storage and handling facilities.

Speaking at the Teagasc Tillage conference near Carlow last Wednesday, Irish government minister Noel Davern said that it is now common for large quantities of grain to be piled outside at harvest time.

"That has obvious implications for quality and safety. To alleviate the problem, my department will be applying for a scheme to develop facilities and provide grants to modernise existing equipment."

It is estimated grants up to 40% of capital cost will be available, however the scheme still has to be approved by the EU.
