Great Holstein herd dispersed
A HOST of cow families from the all-time-greats of UK black-and-white breeding was up for grabs at the Hoarehall Holstein herd dispersal and it was one from Monogram by Picston Shaker, which was first to make the joint top price of 3200gns.
Brothers Tony and Robin Varnam, with Robins son Rocky, ended over 50 years of successful breeding when 211 head were offered on farm at Coleshill, near Birmingham.
Joint sale topper, Hoarehall Monogram 8th VG86, calved her first last December and had given 5166kg in 145 days. She is out of Martin-Place-HL Mark Horace which goes back to Avondale Linmack Monogram as fourth dam. Monogram 8th was bought by R and M Haines, Glos.
Richard Godber, from the Midlands, equalled the bid to take Hoarehall Teresa 7th, a 15-month-old Robthom Integrity daughter out of a Raider dam, with four-times 10,000kg Blackstar as second dam.
Youngstock prices followed the upward trend seen at many recent sales with a 2300gns call from JE Taylor and Son, Skipton, North Yorkshire, to claim the June 2002-bred Hoarehall Delila 3rd. This was another smart Integrity daughter out of an Etazon Hokes cow.
A total of 25 cattle went to North Yorkshire, including another to the Taylors Smellows herd when Hoarehall Melody 5th made 2100gns.
This nine-month-old daughter of Regancrest Elton Dante is out of Comely Dombinator Melody, bringing breeding to the milky Startmore Melody family, with a direct line to the great brood cow A Jim-Mar-D Astronaut Gail.
