Greenpeace slams wind critisism
GREENPEACE has slammed the Conservative Party‘s criticism of the government‘s wind farm policy.
“It is totally irresponsible of Michael Howard to try to undermine this vital solution to climate change,” said Greenpeace energy campaigner Jim Footner.
“The Tories‘ short-sighted policy threatens to deprive farmers of a new, environmentally friendly form of income and puts UK efforts to tackle climate change at risk.”
“The farming community is vulnerable to the devastating effects global warming is already causing.
“Last year alone saw agricultural losses across Europe amounting to almost £8.5bn due to the summer heatwave. Over thirty thousand people died.”
“Extreme weather events like this caused by climate change will become worse and more frequent unless forms of energy like wind power are given a real chance to succeed,” Mr Footner said.
Friends of the Earth climate campaigner Bryony Worthington said: “Wind farms are essential if we are going to tackle the very real threat of climate change – the biggest challenge this planet faces.
“They can and must be located sensitively to reduce their environmental impacts, which is why the new planning guidelines are needed.
“But the Government must also invest more in this country‘s potential for wave and tidal power.”
